In this image, Edith McDermott (nee:Lyness) is instructing a class of students at Pitt Meadows Elementary. The student in the red shirt is Debbie Oakes. The girl in the blue dress is Lorilee McMynn. The photo was taken in 1961c. Mrs. McDermott contributed significantly to education in Pitt Meadows as a teacher, principal and as a historian. She began her teaching career in 1918 at the Number 1 school. She was the first principal of Pitt Meadows Elementary from 1953-1961. Mr. Beckett took over the position of Principal. After retiring as principal, she returned to teaching primary grades until full retirement in 1963 at the age of 70. In the fall of 1966, as a Canadian Centennial project, Edith researched and wrote the community's history book -- "Through a Century of Progress: The Historical Story of Pitt Meadows". This book was published posthumously in 1967, after her death in a car accident. McDermott's service to Pitt Meadows is commemorated as the school "Edith McDermott elementary" is named after her.
