The images feature hay harvesting happening on the Barnes farm in the 1940s. Here is a history written about the Barnes and Roy family by Elizabeth (Barnes) Bruce in May of 2014. “My parents were Pauline Roy and Robert James (Jimmy) Barnes. Their families both ended up living in Pitt Meadows, which is where they met and lived out their lives… The Kennedys also had a dairy farm on the south side of the tracks between the tracks and the Katzie slough. Eventually, there was a land swap, and the Kennedys farmed the land north of the tracks, and the Barnes family took land on the south side. The Barnes home remained on the north side on an acre of land… My parents met before WWII, possibly through the Kennedy “kids” who were friends of Mom’s and neighbours of Dads family. They never talked much about their early years…Jimmy and Pauline were married in February of 1946, lived for a short time in a rental on Lougheed Highway, east of the Pitt River, and worked on the farm. In April of 1946, his father died, and they moved into the farmhouse. Mom and Dad had three daughters – Judy in 1948, Elizabeth in 1950, and Charlotte in 1951… In the early days, my Grandparents had work horses and other animals on the farm, but Dad only had cows. Of course, we kids wanted a horse, but he said “A horse eats as much as five cows, and doesn’t give milk”…On March 15, 1971 an auction was held at the farm to sell the cows and equipment…Dad’s retirement didn’t last long enough, and he died of natural causes on July 10, 1976 at the Pitt Meadows Gun Club. Mom was killed by a drunk driver 16 months later. The house was sold and is now gone.”
