Mrs. McDermott contributed significantly to education in Pitt Meadows as a Teacher, Principal and as a Historian. She began her teaching career in 1918 at the Number 1 school. She was the first Principal of Pitt Meadows Elementary from 1953-1961. After retiring as principal, she returned to teaching primary grades until full retirement in 1963 at the age of 70. In the fall of 1966, as a Canadian Centennial project, Edith researched and wrote the community's history book -- Through a Century of Progress: The Historical Story of Pitt Meadows<\/i>. This book was published posthumously in 1967, after her death in a car accident.
