The story of immigration is a story of us. Most of us have descended from immigrants who came to this country with hopes and dreams of making a better life for themselves and their families.
Canada has had laws and regulations surrounding immigrants since 1869. These have changed and shifted as our ideas and beliefs have changed. We can see shifts in ideologies, politics, and of course racism coursing throughout the decades. Certain groups have been seen as more desirable than others and their routes into this country have been a lot easier, whereas “undesirable” immigrants were heavily regulated, and discriminated against making it almost impossible to get here. Every single person who has immigrated here has sacrificed, given up the known for the unknown, all for the promise of something better. Canada is known as a multicultural country, and we would not have that label without immigrants who have come here.
Pitt Meadows is a colonial settler community. For Culture Days 2024, we’re bringing you their stories, the immigration stories of four large groups that eventually settled in the area.
Katzie has been here since time immemorial. We acknowledge that these stories wouldn’t be possible without the use of their traditional territory.
