Summer Programming with Hollis,

Summer Programming with Hollis

Our wonderful CSJ Student Hollis had a great summer here at the Museum! Here is all about their summer in their own words:

Hi! My name is Hollis, I worked here last summer and now I'm here again! I'm a high school graduate who's hopefully going to be at SFU taking courses on forensic science in the fall of 2025! Forensics has nothing to do with museums but I do think that this job has helped me grow so I can work at other jobs with ease and without stress. I spent my summer at the Pitt Meadows Museum working as the Heritage Thursday Program Coordinator. I made crafts that were engaging to kids 5-12 years old and made sure that each email regarding the program was addressed and responded to.

Each week was something different and I tried to explore my creativity to make each craft something special. Though I did use quite a lot of paper plates for the crafts, I do think I was able to make each week something new and exciting for the kids to enjoy. We crafted things like Venus flytrap hand puppets, tornadoes in a jar, paper plate bugs, and toilet paper roll beavers. We also had quite a few competitions to see how many marbles would sink a paper boat (the record was 31!),who could chart cloud formations first, and identify edible and inedible mushrooms!

I worked on Heritage Thursdays last year but only to prepare crafts and during the sessions, this year was completely different, I was actually making the crafts myself and dealing with signing up kids and making sure everything went smoothly. It was a lot harder but it wasn't overwhelming. The other people around helped me stand on my feet through the whole thing.

It has been a pleasure working here. I've been able to spread my creativity and since I was still the one to greet everyone who came into the museum, I've been able to spread my knowledge and love for this city and positively impact the days of our visitors. I hope to do this again next year as it's just been such a wonderful time here.
