My name is Kia and I am one of this summer’s student employees. I’m currently studying Political Sciences and French at Simon Fraser University. When I saw the job posting for a “Museum Interpreter”, I thought that it would be a great opportunity for me to learn more about the history of Pitt Meadows and gain some experience working with archives and research.
My main job this summer is organizing the children’s programs known as “Heritage Thursdays” here at the museum. This year’s theme is called “Moo to Pooh” and focuses on agriculture since, historically, Pitt Meadows is a farming community. Researching different aspects of farming and planning out my seven sessions has been my priority these past few weeks. I was also involved in helping out behind the scenes with this year’s Pitt Meadows Day and with the Museum Sundays drop-in program.
In addition to my work on the summer programs, I have also been learning skills specific to museum work. As of late I have practised accessioning artifacts that the museum has collected and have catalogued them on the database. It has definitely been an interesting learning experience for me! Leslie, Jen and Jess have all been excellent teachers who have helped me along the way to familiarise myself with the museum and how it works. My work at the museum has only just begun and I already love it. I’d like to thank the Canada Summer Jobs Program for making my work at the museum possible this summer. I’m truly looking forward to learning as much as I can while I’m here and really seizing this wonderful opportunity!
